BOBCAT ENCOUNTERPhotographed 11.21.07
Driving north along the Pacific coastline in Santa Cruz County, we stopped for a picnic lunch at Wilder Ranch State Park. My visual scanner was on ''high alert'' for wildlife, and I was not disappointed. Lying in the shadow of a plank fence was a wild Bobcat.
I don't have a telephoto lens, so I had to close the distance between me and the cat to get a decent shot. From behind, my daughter was cautioning, ''Mama! Don't make it feel threatened, or it will attack!'' I did my best to not look menacing.
In retrospect, I realize I couldn't have gotten so near if the cat was scared. I think Bobcats are accustomed to the presence of friendly humans who constantly trek the 34 miles of trails in this protected 5000 acre state park. Besides, Bobcats let out a piercing scream when threatened, and all I heard was a single low-pitched growl.
I'm so glad to have a picture of this beautiful non-captive feline.
